Any espresso aficionado knows that your brew is only as good as your grind, and that uneven particle size can kill even the best beans and most expertly tamped shot.
The Baratza Encore is the baby of the Baratza line, but don't let that fool you. It comes with some powerful features that make it a great entry-level grinder for the burgeoning home barista who wants a little of everything - from a fine grind for espresso (which is what we're interested in) to a coarse grind for French press and pour over. The Encore features 40 adjustable grind settings that make finding - and repeating - your favorite grind size a snap. Its 40 mm hardened steel conical burrs are durable and give you a precise grind with minimal silt.
Where it really gets interesting, though, is under the hood. The Encore boasts Baratza's brand new Gearbox 2.0, a rethought gearbox first rolled out this year. The GB 2.0 is redesigned and made from 15% glass-filled thermoplastic, making it quieter and more wear-resistant than metal gears. This is accompanied by a speed control feature that holds the rotation rate of the burr at 450 RPM (though it's adjustable between 405 and 495 RPM), keeping it cool and quiet.
We think the Encore is a great option for any nascent coffee nut. It looks pretty good next to a brand new ZPM Nocturn, too!
